Comp 9

The tide is out. We watch a person faceless, nameless at extreme distance. The camera has tried to create a sense of intimacy, to give us more information with its zoom but failed. It's images warp, we're left with silhouettes which conceal the subjects age and the details of their appearance. The water becomes something else, it rises like a wall instead of laying out into the horizon. It's shimmer has become a field of pixels.

Audio also fails. The audio’s intent, is to persuade and to remember but can it be trusted? It breaks in parts, mispronounces, and speeds up. It doesn't align to the text or imagery at times. It's been taken out of its context and made to fall under one narrative voice with the use of AI. The voice pretends to be human, effects one like a person’s voice can, and emulates voice, but is it? Just as the VHS effect emulates the old VHS, degrading the image but also creating something new, as Saskia told me today. What happens when the artist finds someone who is at extreme distance from them, uses someone else’s words and their technical, temporal, photographic context applying those things to the current time and their own experience, voice and vision?

Shot in New Haven in 2023
